TEAM UPDATE

Hi all!

We are now in the Dry Valleys! Karen arrived on November 21st after a half-day delay in her scheduled flight because of a low cloud ceiling. John arrived on December 4th after a two-day delay because of whiteout conditions in McMurdo. Both of us were very excited to finally reach our new home.

To get to the Dry Valleys from Ross Island where McMurdo Station is located you must take a helicopter across McMurdo Sound. For Karen, it was her first helicopter ride ever.
John had already been in a helicopter previously but it was the first time he had ever seen icebergs.

The ride across the sound affords views of the McMurdo ice shelf, sea ice, and islands. After around 30 minutes you get your first glimpse of the continent - and of the glaciers descending into the barren terrain of the Dry Valleys.
