Description:

Valve linear, strongly gibbous in the middle portion; poles slightly swollen and rounded.  Axial area small and linear.  Central area wide, generally rounded, and often with a thickening of the valve beneath the central area (see Round et al., 1990 for SEM illustrations of this feature).  Raphe straight with simple proximal raphe ends.  Striae linear and composed of elongate puncta. Striae may difficult to see in the light microscope.

Morphology: Naviculoid
Distribution: Widespread

Notes:

The strongly swollen central portion of the valve separates this form from the nominate form.

Navicula minuta a latere secundario lineari oblonga obtusa medio leviter tumida, nodulo centrali parvo, striis transversalibus subtillimis subparallelis plerumque vix conspicuis ultra 60 in 0.001".
