Description:
Valve linear-elliptical with rounded ends. Axial area distinct, widening towards the center. Central area small and rounded. Raphe straight, slightly widened at the center of the valve. Striae radiate throughout; more irregular and widely spaced at the center of the valve.
| Morphology: | Naviculoid |

| Distribution: | South Victorialand endemic |
Notes:
The specimens encountered in this study were similar to those shown in Krammer and Lange-Bertalot (1986) as occurring in the spectrum of variation found in M. atomus. However, our specimens were substantially larger than those illustrated as the nominate variety and more closely resemble M. atomus var. excelsa in size. The denser striae and narrower axial area, however, separate this variety from M. atomus var. excelsa.
