Observations

Observations: S. Spaulding & R. Esposito
Length: 7-10 µm
Width: 2.5-3.5 µm
Striae: 30-36 in 10 µm

Description:

Valve linear-elliptical with rounded ends. Axial area small and linear.  Central area small or indistinct.  Raphe straight, slightly widened at the center of the valve.  Striae radiate throughout; more widely spaced at the center.

Morphology: Naviculoid
Distribution: Widespread

Notes:

Hustedt (1945) originally described this species as N. permitis.  Hustedt was unable to see any striae on his specimens, although the images of Hustedt's holotypes in Simonsen (1987) illustrate approximately 36 striae per 10 micrometers (pl. 508, fig. 25-27).  Krammer and Lange-Bertalot (1985) have designated this species as a variety of N. atomus, but perhaps its fomer ranking as a distinct species was justified based upon its narrower valve shape and finer striae.  More recently, Lange-Bertalot (1997) transferred this species from the genus Navicula to the genus Mayamaea, but its status as a variety of M. atomus remained intact.
