Observations

Observations: S. Spaulding & R. Esposito
Length: 9-21 µm
Width: 6-10 µm
Striae: 15-18 in 10 µm

Description:

Valves ranging from nearly elliptical to sub-elliptic with rostrate ends.  Axial area distinct, widening towards the central region of the valve.  Central area an acute-angled sub-fascia, usually with a single row of poroids around the outer edge.  A single stigma is present.  Raphe straight; median and terminal raphe endings slightly hooked in the opposite direction of the stigma.  Striae radiate throughout. The small shape of the valve, the truncate endings, and the acute-angled sub-fascia separate this form from the nominate variety.

Morphology: Naviculoid
Distribution: Antarctic endemic

Notes:

This species was transferred to the genus Luticola by Spaulding et al. (1997). Both Hustedt (1961-1966) and Kellogg et al. (1980) make arguments for placing this form in synonymy with Navicula muticopsis. They argue that this form and others (evoluta, capitata) all grade imperceptably into each other. Ko-Bayashi (1965) makes a similar arguement, but concludes that form capitata should be upheld as a different form based upon its unique valve shape (see L.muticopsis fo. capitata). I
