Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 30-80µm
Width: 16-23µm
Striae: 9-12 striae in 10µm

Valves rhombic to elliptical-lanceolate (L 30-80µm, W 16-23µm, 9-12 striae in 10µm). The striae, consisting of one row of areolae, are separated by highly silicified costae. Each areola is built of several parallel rows of small poroids. RV: axial area lanceolate, central area sometimes bordered by 2-4 striae. The central raphe nodules are completely curved backwards. ARV: the very narrow pseudo-raphe is completely deplaced to one valve side (therefore sometimes difficult to observe). At each valve pole, the presence of an 'orbiculus' should be noted (Le Cohu & Maillard 1983). This orbiculus is connected with the pseudo-raphe.

Morphology: Monoraphid
Distribution: Antarctic endemic

Very rare taxon. Only observed in very low frequencies, mostly in alkaline lakes and pools with higher specific conductance values (up to 2090µS/cm). Also present in semi-wet soils (35-50%).South Georgia (Carlson 1913, Fukushima 1965, Van de Vijver & Beyens 1996, 1997a), Kerguelen (Le Cohu & Maillard 1983 : A. inflata).Le Cohu & Maillard (1983) discussed the presence of Achnanthes inflata on the nearby Kerguelen archipelago. Based on comparison between SEM material from South Georgia and Crozet, the designated Kerguelen valves belong to A. muelleri. The status of A. muelleri as a separate taxon should be further investigated. It is possible that the Subantarctic valves are conspecific with A. inflata var. elata (Leuduger-Fortmorel) Hustedt.
