Although there are over ten Dry Valleys, the U.S. Antarctic Program does most of its work in just one of them - Taylor Valley. Taylor Valley has four base camps. The Stream Team makes use mostly of two of them, the main base camp at Lake Hoare and a smaller one at F6. The Lake Hoare base camp has a spectacular location at the foot of Canada Glacier on the north shore of Lake Hoare. F6 is situated where Von Guerard Stream empties into Lake Fryxell. The United States Geological Survey has installed a gauge to measure the flow of the stream and has designated the gauge F6. F is for Fryxell, six is the gauge number. So the camp has that name as well. F6 is special for the Stream Team because we are responsible for opening the camp, and we spend a good deal of time there.
